Mockups of the upcoming iPod HD
This afternoon I came across an AppleInsider article that talked about the rumored Apple tablet device once more, and once more they had a mockup of said device. don’t get me wrong, I love mockups of rumored Apple devices. I love looking at them and thinking about whether I will be buying them or not, and fantasize about the two of us together.
but lately, people have taken no pride in their mockup work. they all look like crap! just look at this thing on the AppleInsider page. it’s a scaled up iphone! look at that bezel. it’s f-ing huge! nobody would like to hold this in their hands. stupid amateurs.
that’s why today I became active and forged my own mockup version of the device. the results are here.
I have taken some time and tried to calculate the screen resolution and icon sizes according to what I knew about the iphone and other devices of the same size.
if people can be trusted, the, let’s call it iPod HD for the time, will sport a 10 inch display. i assumed the same 160 ppi as with the original iphones and an aspect ration of 16:10, like with all apple laptop screens. that got me to a resolution of either 1280×800px or, if they’re really into it, 1440×900px. I went with option one and built the plastic and metal around that. with my second image you can estimate the screen real estate, when you compare it to the original iphone icons. seems like a big screen now.
anyway, I don’t want to talk to much about it. enjoy. I’m kind of excited to see how the thing turns out in the end. which we will probably know by 2010.

still with only one button (that can’t even be used for gaming purposes) for actual gaming I still prefer hardware buttons over multi-touch. both for maximum enjoyment (see Nintendo DS)

Bei Deinen Mockup ist Dir leider ein ganz prinzipieller Fehler bei den Icons unterlaufen: es kann nur *einen* App-Store geben !

Schwimmbadfliegen
sie sind mir schon ein paar mal aufgefallen, meist im hallenbad in der dusche: eklige kleine schwarze fliegen. allerdings habe ich sie entweder zu hause wieder vergessen, oder konnte niemand beschreiben, was ich meine. jetzt hab ich mir mal die zeit genommen, zu recherchieren und sie besser kennenzulernen.
offensichtlich handelt es sich um sogenannte schmetterlingsmücken. widerlich, ich weiss. aber wenn ich das hier festhalte, vergess ich sie wenigstens nicht wieder.
scheinbar treten sie auch oft in hiesigen badezimmern auf, krabbeln aus dem abfluss und ekeln leute. abhilfe scheint zu schaffen wenn man kein wasser stehen laesst und alles gut trocken ist. alternativ kann man auch einen ganzen haufen giftige mittel in den abfluss kippen. zum glueck sind wir bisher von ihnen verschont geblieben. vielleicht wohnen sie nicht gern in solcher höhe.

schon sehr eklig. was man auf dem foto nicht sieht, sind ihre riesigen vampirzaehne zum blutsaugen. wehrlose nackte leiber in der dusche und nowhere to run. bon appetit.

Fixing the missing SMS character count with iPhone OS 3.0
This morning my girlfriend Eva surprised me with an incredibly smart solution to a shortcoming in iPhone’s SMS app that had been bugging me ever since it first launched in 2007. As you all know, the iPhone does not show a character count for messages as you type. Or ever, for that matter.
I read about the “after four lines it’s 160 characters” hints and some SMS apps for jailbroken iPhones, but since I’m on a 3GS right now and there is no jailbreak as of today, I find her idea really simple and brilliant.
It is pretty simple and straightforward: since we got copy and paste with iPhone OS 3.0 we can now safely write our messages in apps other than SMS.app. And there are apps out there that DO keep count on message characters. That’s right: twitter apps! For my first try I chose birdhouse (which I bought just this morning for this exact matter but there are plenty of free ones like twitterrific) which has the most beautiful icon I have on my phone right now. It works like this:1. create a new tweet in your favorite twitter app
2. type until it displays -20 (that’s a minus, since we want 160 characters instead of 140)
3. copy the text
4. switch to SMS.app
5. paste the text and send your exact 160 charactersI know it’s a little bit of a workaround, but a really good one I figured. And it works like a charm. If you don’t need it, just dismiss it, but I only have a 40 SMS/month plan and hate to waste an entire SMS for just a few to many characters. There is an app called “WordCounter” in the itunes store which tells you # of characters you type into a screen. You can then cut and paste from this into a txt.

New iPhone OS 3.0 icons for Phone, Messages and iPod
Ok, sie haben die Icons im iPhone OS 3.0 geändert. Aber warum? Ich denke, der zusätzliche gestreifte Hintergrund macht sie nicht ikonischer oder deutlicher. Oder einfacher zu erkennen. Sind die neuen Icons die transparente Menüleiste des iPhone (vgl. OSX Leopard)? Schön plastisch sehen sie schon aus, so 1:1 auf dem Display. Nur Sinn machts halt nicht. Mal sehen, wann sie das nächste Mal anders werden. So lange könnt ihr euch ja an meiner tollen Montage erfreuen, die ich zum Vergleich angefertigt habe.
PS: Übrigens wurde auch der graue Hintergrund der 4 Haupticons angepasst. Sieht jetzt schärfer aus und hat keinen Verlauf mehr in dem die “Tiefe der Perforation” abnimmt. Alle anderen Icons sehen für mich ziemlich identisch aus.

Das Schlimme find ich eigentlich, dass unter dem gängigen Doppelgängerverständnis es ja meist so ist, dass einer von beiden der Böse ist. Nun ist der ja aber Richter, also tendenziell gut. Heisst das, ich bin eigentlich SEIN böser Doppelgänger?
