Scuffgate – How could this happen?

The iPhone 5 is upon us, and with it a new scandal, “Scuffgate“. Apparently, some devices come out of the box, already showing scratches on their aluminum enclosures. I did some research at a Foxconn plant, where the devices are assembled. As it turns out, Apple’s explanation—that scratches are totally normal to these kinds of devices—makes sense once you have seen the conditions under which the factory produces the iPhones. See for yourself. There is no scandal, no defective machine, and no magic. Aluminum just isn’t as strong as stainless steel.
